Emblemata Lenormand - Card 4, The House

Traditional Meaning: The Home, privacy

The House in the Realms:

Spiritual: A church or group of like-minded associates

Emotional: Your comfort zone

Mental: An area you know a lot about

Physical: Your physical home, where you regularly sleep

Correspondences:

Moon Phase: Full – Familiarity surrounds you

Astrological Sign: Taurus

Element: Earth

Latin motto: Circling back in your own tracks

Directional: No

The House speaks:

“I am the center point, the origin from which you come. Wherever you are most comfortable and at peace, there I stand. I am the familiar ground over which you have walked many times. I am the private dwelling, where you can be alone. At my best, I hold at bay the struggles of daily life. At my worst, I surround you with sameness that obscures the possibilities that surround you.”

Interpretation Advice:

The House represents where you feel most comfortable. It could be the place you live or work. Or it may represent a system of beliefs or practices. Its familiar outline can represent where you retreat to obtain your privacy and peace of mind. The well-known territory of the House can be a blessing or a curse. It provides comfort but its comfort can also prevent us from venturing forth to experience new things. The motto of the House “Circling back in your own tracks” reinforces the idea of return – this is territory you visit and revisit.

A deeper look into the image’s symbolism:

  • Yard behind house – the depths of what home represents, the expansive nature of our inner homes and dwellings

  • Mountains in background – challenges and adventures that could be had if you step outside of your home turf

  • Figure returning home – at some point, we must return to the home we make for ourselves to replenish energy and rest

  • Smoke from chimney – resources and comfort that are available inside

  • Village – the outside world from which we retreat
